BAE Podcast

With the BAE podcast, we dove into the first-generation Black experience in Australia. Our trio, Ida, Shetu, and myself, aimed to provide a space for Black women to relax, feel heard, and be inspired. We created a community for young Black women in Australia, covering topics like identity and relationships, offering a unique blend of depth, entertainment, and relatability inspired by shows like "Red Table Talks" and "Super Soul Conversations."

BAE: Before All Else was a podcast project I participated in with two friends, Shetu and Ida. Together, we delved into the deep blue waters of the first-generation Black experience in Australia, discussing various topics that resonated with a diverse audience, particularly young women of colour from Sydney. It was not your typical wellness podcast; instead, we aimed to provide a space for Black women in Australia to relax, feel heard, and feel inspired to get the most out of life. Before All Else, we believed, one must prioritise oneself.

In this past project, Ida, a Ghanaian-Australian psychotherapist, brought depth, insight, and a commitment to prioritising Black women’s mental health. Shetu, our unicorn journalist from Western Sydney, added charisma with her husky-voiced deep thinking and dreams of creating a media company in Ghana. & Me-Alesandra, a quick-witted 30-year-old from Sydney’s west, infused the podcast with her comedic flair, intellectual pop-culture insights, and a passion for diversity.

We covered a range of topics, including identity, success, sex, and relationships. We aimed to create a community where Black women in Australia could relax, feel heard, and find inspiration in prioritising themselves. Our audience was primarily young Black women of African and Caribbean descent aged 20-35 living in Australia. However, the podcast would also entertain other women within this age bracket - and people outside this demographic often told us they enjoyed it. Drawing inspiration from shows like “Black Girl in Om,” “Red Table Talks,” “Still Processing NYT,” “Super Soul Conversations,” and “Call Your Girlfriend,” BAE aimed to offer a unique blend of depth, entertainment, and relatability, creating a homecoming for our listeners.
